The method to measure water flow in sugarcane stalks was developed to measure ratoon stunting disease (RSD) resistence. To study the validity to the new method, stalks of commercial and differential varieties for RSD were used comparing the water flow of healthy and diseased stems in the same variety. The results indicated that in RSD, tolerant varieties, the flow difference between healthy and diseased stalks was always small. In susceptible cariestes, the same difference was always very large. From all tests, the evidence that there is a positive correlation among sharp drop in water flow and RSD susceptibility in sugarcane was inferred. The determination of water flow in healthy and diseased stalks can be a very efficient, secure, fast and economic screening method for RSD, and possibly for other vascular diseases when all facts that might interfere in this determination will be under perfect control. |
